NJ: The Schooley's Mountain Liberty Eagle

Monday, December 1st: This is the first time I'm riding into December. It was a stange weather day: tiny bits of sun, rain, and hail. My ride today took me up Schooley's Mountain and past the Liberty Eagle. The eagle was carved from the trunk of what had been called the Liberty Tree.

In 1997, the 300 year old oak was dying, " a victim of surrounding asphalt, road salt, and just plain old age." It would have to come down. The township committee ultimately decided to transform the trunk into a scultpure. Harry Robinson of Bernardsville, NJ, visited the tree to determine "what the tree wanted to be." He proposed an eagle to the township committee and was hired for $3,500.
